MLB predictions FAQ

How does the model predict MLB games?

Each team has an offence and defence rating from goals scored and allowed, weighted toward recent games. The ratings set expected goals for each side, and a Poisson model turns those into win probabilities and the most likely score. Regulation ties are split by the two teams’ strength, since every game has a winner.

What does the edge column mean?

The difference between the model’s win probability and the market’s no-vig probability, in points. Under 3 points is noise.

Does the model account for goalies or injuries?

No. It uses results and schedule only, which is why the market column sits beside it.

How are MLB picks graded?

The pick is the team with the higher model probability, scored the morning after the game. The Brier score records how well calibrated the probability was. Everything is on the results page, misses included.
