Manchester United relegation is now a real risk on the numbers. After a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Michael Carrick’s side sit 17th in the Premier League on seven points from nine games, level with 18th-placed Crystal Palace and kept out of the bottom three only by goal difference. On Sunday, former manager Erik ten Hag told ESPN that the drop is “certainly possible.” United are collecting 0.77 points per game, need 0.86 to reach the lowest total that has ever been enough to stay up, and the betting market has drifted against them for both of their next two home games.
Manchester United Relegation Warning: What Ten Hag Said
Erik ten Hag’s view is that Manchester United can genuinely go down this season, because the Premier League has no soft landing spots. Speaking on ESPN NL’s Goedemorgen Eredivisie, the former Old Trafford manager said relegation is “certainly possible, because all the teams are simply strong,” and warned that a club caught in “that vicious circle” can find it “very, very difficult” to escape. Ten Hag, now technical director at Dutch side FC Twente, ran United from April 2022 to November 2024. He finished third in his first season, won the Carabao Cup in 2022-23 and the FA Cup a year later, then was sacked with the club 14th. His comment lands on a club that has not been relegated since 1974 and is in its worst start to a season since 1986, according to ESPN’s analysis of the Chelsea defeat.
The remark matters less as prophecy than as a signal. In our view, when a former manager with no reason to soften his words calls the drop realistic, it is a sign United are now judged as a squad that cannot manage setbacks.
Carrick took the opposite line after the Chelsea loss. Asked whether there would be a stigma in sitting in the bottom three, he said “Not for me, no,” and argued that a few wins would move United “up the league quite quickly.”
Premier League Table: United’s Gap to the Bottom Three
The Premier League table shows Manchester United in a five-team cluster separated by four points, which is why the relegation talk is not exaggerated. United have one win, four draws and four defeats (1-4-4) for seven points and a goal difference of -5. Crystal Palace also have seven points but a goal difference of -12, Nottingham Forest have six and Sunderland have five. Above United, Coventry City and Fulham have nine points each, while Everton have ten from eight games. Leaders Arsenal are on 24 points, and Manchester City are already 14 points clear of their neighbours. United’s only league win came against Ipswich Town in August, and ESPN reports the run is now nine games without a win in all competitions, the first such stretch since 1988-89. One more defeat while Palace or Forest pick up points would put United in the drop zone outright.

Points Per Game Needed to Survive: 0.86 vs 0.77
Seven points from nine games is 0.77 points per game. ESPN’s analysis calculates that over a full season this works out to 29.3 points, and no team has ever survived in the Premier League with fewer than 30. The lowest total to stay up was Nottingham Forest’s 32 in 2023-24. Using that as a floor, United need 25 more points from their remaining 29 league games, a rate of 0.86 per game. That is not a heroic target, but it is still higher than the rate United have managed so far this season.
Michael Carrick’s Job After the Chelsea Defeat
Michael Carrick’s position looks close to untenable because the Chelsea loss showed the same collapse pattern that has defined United’s season. United dominated the first half: Amad Diallo had three clear chances, Bruno Fernandes skied another, and Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out by VAR for offside. Then Morgan Rogers ran through a gap between Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez to score in the 50th minute. Martínez was booked twice inside two minutes, the second for an arm on Wesley Fofana that also gave away the penalty Cole Palmer converted in the 64th minute, leaving United with ten men for the final 28 minutes. It was a third straight defeat and four losses in five games. ESPN sources say the club’s leadership committee chose last week to keep Carrick despite the availability of Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, Kieran McKenna and Julian Nagelsmann.
The squad issues will not be fixed by a new face alone. First-choice left back Luke Shaw and centre forward Benjamin Sesko are both injured, and ESPN reports that United say they lack the money to reinforce those positions in January. Only once this season have United come from a goal down to win, against Ipswich. That is the clearest statistic behind Ten Hag’s “vicious circle” line: a goal against currently ends the contest.
Man United Odds vs AS Roma and Aston Villa
Man United odds for the next two home games price Carrick’s side as slight favourites but well short of a coin flip, and both lines have drifted against them since opening. For Tuesday’s Old Trafford Champions League game with AS Roma (20:00 UK), DraftKings via ESPN has United at +130, the draw at +295 and Roma at +175. Removing the bookmaker margin from that 105.2% market gives United a 41.3% chance, the draw 24.1% and Roma 34.6%. United opened at +105, so the market has moved roughly five points of implied probability away from them. The league game with Aston Villa on Sunday Nov 8 (16:30 UK) tells the same story: United +125, draw +275, Villa +190, which works out to a 42.1% vig-free win chance after opening at +115. ESPN notes that failing to beat Roma would equal United’s worst run of results in 75 years.
| Match | United price (open) | Draw | Opponent | United vig-free win % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AS Roma at Man United, Tue Nov 3 | +130 (+105) | +295 | +175 | 41.3% |
| Aston Villa at Man United, Sun Nov 8 | +125 (+115) | +275 | +190 | 42.1% |
Treated as independent events, those prices give United about a 17.4% chance of winning both games. In other words, the market sees a clean sweep of both home games as unlikely. If you want the method behind these numbers, our guide to converting betting odds into implied probability walks through it step by step.
Premier League Table Rivals: Relegation Fixtures, Nov 6-8
The next Premier League round gives Manchester United a chance to gain ground, because the four sides closest to them are all underdogs next round. On Sunday Nov 8, Crystal Palace host Liverpool at Selhurst Park as +400 outsiders, about a 20.0% raw implied chance of a home win. Nottingham Forest host Manchester City on Saturday at The City Ground at +350, roughly 22.2%. Sunderland welcome Chelsea to the Stadium of Light at +250 (28.6%), and Coventry City, two points above United, travel to Everton on Friday at +350 (22.2%). All four figures are raw implied probabilities that still include the bookmaker margin, so the true chances are slightly lower. If the favourites win those games, a United win over Aston Villa would lift them clear of the bottom three by a few points and change the tone of the international break. A United defeat, combined with even one upset below them, would put the 20-time English champions in the relegation zone heading into a trip to Liverpool at Anfield after the break.
- Tue Nov 3, 20:00 UK: Manchester United vs AS Roma (Champions League)
- Fri Nov 6, 20:00 UK: Everton vs Coventry City
- Sat Nov 7, 17:30 UK: Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City
- Sun Nov 8, 14:00 UK: Crystal Palace vs Liverpool; Sunderland vs Chelsea
- Sun Nov 8, 16:30 UK: Manchester United vs Aston Villa
Our read: United still have enough attacking quality to stay up, since the first half at Chelsea produced chance after chance, but we would not back them to win either home game at these prices. The market gives only a 17.4% chance of two wins, and the 0.86 points-per-game target means even a draw with Villa keeps the pressure building.
